  • USB Flash Drive: Minimum 8 GB for the Proxmox installer.

Procedure

Step 1: Download Proxmox VE ISO

Download the latest official Proxmox VE ISO installer directly from the Proxmox website:

Step 2: Download Rufus

Download the latest version of Rufus, which is the recommended lightweight tool to create your bootable installation media on Windows:

https://rufus.ie

Step 3: Flash the ISO to USB

  1. Connect your USB flash drive (minimum 4 GB) to your computer.
  2. Open Rufus.
  3. Select your USB drive under the Device dropdown menu.
  4. Click Select next to “Boot selection” and choose your downloaded Proxmox VE ISO file.
  5. Keep the default settings (Partition scheme: GPT, Target system: UEFI).
  6. Click Start.
  7. Crucial: When Rufus asks you to choose a write mode, select Write in DD Image mode and click OK. (Proxmox installers often fail to boot if flashed in standard ISO mode).
  8. Wait for the status bar to show Ready, then safely eject your USB drive.
